I Just Saved 25% on US Forever Postage Stamps
Articles > Shopping Examples > I Just Saved $128 After Sale Price on my Computer
Background
Remember, it’s best not to let any money out of your money pond. But when you do have to let some out – when you do have to spend some money – slow the flow as much as possible.
When you do need to buy something, remember to aim for six layers of savings:
1️⃣ Sale price
2️⃣ Coupon
3️⃣ Cashback site on CardCash
4️⃣ CardCash
5️⃣ Credit card on CardCash
6️⃣ Cashback at retailer
Here’s what happened
I needed stamps. It may seem like the only place you can buy stamps is at the post office and certain grocery stores – and, by implication, it may seem like your only option is to pay full price for postage stamps. But that’s not the case.
You can buy regular stamps on eBay – for less than retail price. I’m not sure how the sellers manage to make a profit on this, but that’s not my concern. My concern is slowing the flow out of my money pond and saving money.
I was looking to buy 100 stamps. At $0.60/stamp (as they were at the time) that would’ve been $60 retail.
1️⃣But, I found a pack of 100 regular, genuine, Forever postage stamps on eBay for only $44.60. There was a tax when buying through eBay (which there isn’t at the post office), but with a 6% sales tax the total was still only $47.28 (well under $60 for retail price). This was the equivalent of a sale price for layer 1 above.
+$12.72💰
2️⃣After checking the cashback services I saw that RetailMeNot was providing 5% cashback for eBay.
+$2.36💰
3️⃣I used my PayPal credit card to receive 6% cashback.
+$2.84
Results:
🟰Overall I saved $17.92 (30%)💰
Assessment
Since I wasn’t able to use coupons or CardCash, I was only able to achieve three out of six layers of savings. Still, for postage stamps, a 30% savings is satisfactory.
Conclusion
It’s best to not spend money. But when you do need to send that letter to Mom, aim for your six layers of savings.
